Victorian Hair Mourning Brooch

This is a poignant Victorian mourning brooch, crafted from yellow metal and featuring black enamel. The oval brooch houses a section of woven hair, likely from a loved one, beneath a glass cover. The brooch is adorned with a decorative, raised border, typical of Victorian jewellery, and features a pin fitting to the reverse for secure attachment. This style of jewellery was popular during the Victorian era as a way to remember and honour the deceased.

Condition and Collectibility

The brooch shows signs consistent with age and use, including minor wear to the enamel and metal. The hairwork remains largely intact, though some fading is to be expected with age. This brooch is a fascinating example of Victorian sentimental jewellery and would appeal to collectors of mourning jewellery, Victorian artefacts, or those interested in the history of jewellery making. It offers a glimpse into the mourning customs of the Victorian era.
