Introduction

This lot comprises a collection of horse brasses, along with a book titled “Discovering Horse Brasses” by John Vinnicombe. Horse brasses were traditionally attached to horse harnesses, serving both a decorative and practical purpose – the movement of the brasses helped to deter flies. This collection showcases a variety of designs, including floral motifs, geometric patterns, and potentially heraldic emblems, typical of the Victorian and Edwardian eras when horse-drawn transport was prevalent. The book provides valuable insight into the history, symbolism, and collecting of these fascinating equestrian ornaments.

Condition & Collectability

The condition of the brasses varies, with some exhibiting signs of age and wear, including patina and minor surface scratches. The book shows signs of use, consistent with its age, and may contain annotations or markings. This lot will appeal to collectors of equestrian memorabilia, brassware enthusiasts, and those interested in social history. The combination of the brasses and the reference book makes this a particularly desirable lot for anyone looking to expand their knowledge and collection.
