Introduction
This is a fascinating piece of French horological history – a night watchman’s clock, designed for use by security personnel during the late 19th or early 20th century. These clocks were commonly used to verify the rounds of night watchmen, ensuring diligent patrolling of premises. The clock features a robust, protective casing and a clear dial, designed for visibility in low-light conditions. The clock is wound and set to record the time of each patrol check, providing a physical record of the watchman’s duties.
Condition
The clock shows signs of age and use, consistent with its antique status. The casing exhibits wear and patina, adding to its character and authenticity. While the clock may require servicing to ensure accurate timekeeping, it remains a remarkable example of early security technology and a desirable piece for collectors of horological curiosities or those interested in the history of security practices. Its unique design and historical significance make it a captivating addition to any collection.
