Antique Cast Iron Rainwater Hopper
This is a cast iron rainwater hopper, likely dating from the Victorian or Edwardian era. These hoppers were designed to collect water from gutters and direct it down the downspout, forming an integral part of a building’s drainage system. The hopper’s robust construction and decorative detailing reflect the craftsmanship of the period, and would have been a functional and aesthetic element of the building’s exterior.
Condition and Collectibility
This hopper shows signs of age and weathering, with surface rust and wear consistent with its age and outdoor use. While not pristine, this patina adds to its character and authenticity. Collectors and restorers often seek out original architectural salvage pieces like this to restore historic buildings or incorporate into unique design projects.
