WWI German Cannon Shells

This pair of artillery shells dates back to 1917, bearing clear markings indicating their manufacture and date. The shells are cylindrical in form, constructed from steel, and display the stamp “St 9” and “Mai 1917” along with other markings including “W.M.” and “GELSENKIRCHEN” on the base of one shell, and “HI 22” on the other. These shells represent a tangible piece of military history from the First World War, offering a glimpse into the technology and production of the era.

Condition

These shells exhibit signs of age and wear consistent with their history and likely use. There is visible corrosion and patina across the surfaces, and some minor dents and imperfections are present. Despite this, the markings remain largely legible, adding to their historical appeal. These shells would be of interest to collectors of military memorabilia, particularly those focused on World War I ordnance, and would serve as a unique display piece.
