Description

This is a cast iron plaque, prominently featuring a lion rampant within a shield, and the inscription “NORTHERN” above, and “1836” below. The plaque likely originated from the Northern Railway company, dating back to the Victorian era. The detailed casting and heraldic imagery suggest it was once a decorative or identifying element on railway property, perhaps adorning a building or gatepost.

Condition

The plaque exhibits signs of age and weathering, consistent with its antique status. The cast iron shows surface rust and some loss of original paint, adding to its character and patina. This piece would appeal to collectors of railwayana, Victorian ephemera, or cast iron objects, offering a tangible link to the early days of rail travel.
