WWII ARP Gas Rattle

This is a WWII-era Air Raid Precautions (ARP) gas rattle, constructed from wood. The rattle features a wooden handle and a box-like body with internal components that create a loud sound when the handle is operated. Notably, the rattle is marked with “WYCOMBE WANDERERS” suggesting it was also used at football games, likely to signal the start or end of matches. The simple yet effective design was intended to alert people to the presence of gas attacks during wartime.

Condition and Collectibility

This gas rattle shows signs of age and use, with wear and imperfections consistent with its history. The wood exhibits some surface wear and minor damage, but the rattle remains structurally sound. This piece is of interest to collectors of WWII memorabilia, sporting history, and vintage tools. Its dual history as an ARP warning device and a football signalling tool makes it a particularly unique and desirable item.
