WW1 German 1916c Ersatz Bayonet

This is a WW1 German 1916c bayonet, a classic example of the “Ersatz” (substitute) bayonets produced during the later stages of the First World War. These bayonets were manufactured using whatever materials were available due to shortages of steel. This example features a simple construction with a steel blade and a wooden grip, reflecting the wartime necessity for rapid production and material conservation. The 1916c bayonet was designed for use on standard German rifles, providing a close-quarters combat weapon for soldiers in the trenches.

Condition and Collectability

This bayonet shows signs of age and use consistent with its wartime history. The blade exhibits patina and wear, and the wooden grip may show some cracking or loss of finish. While not in pristine condition, this bayonet is a genuine piece of military history, offering a tangible connection to the First World War. It would be of interest to collectors of military memorabilia, particularly those specialising in German weaponry or trench warfare artefacts.
