Antique 19th Century Oil Daguerreotype Portrait in Morocco Case
This antique 19th century oil daguerreotype portrait depicts an elderly gentleman seated in a dark coat and white collar, with a walking cane held in one hand and a small red book resting on a green-covered table beside him. The sitter is shown in three-quarter profile against a soft grey background, set within a gilt-edged mount. The portrait is housed in a morocco case with a hinged front and a maroon velvet-lined interior frame, which is typical of cased portraits of the period.
Condition, Originality and Collector Interest
The portrait is sold as seen. The gilt mount shows wear, the surface of the image has some marks and speckling, and the morocco case shows edge wear and fading. The reverse has a cord and clear adhesive tape applied, and there is a metal ring at the top, so the piece has been handled and adapted over time. These signs of age and use are part of its character, and the cased format, period styling and identifiable sitter detail may appeal to collectors of 19th century portraiture, cased photographic images and antique social history.
