Antique Cast Iron Mechanical Elephant Money Bank
This American cast iron mechanical money bank is described as being in the style of A C Williams. It is modelled as an elephant with its trunk raised and a howdah secured to its back by a decorative saddle cloth. The body is finished in grey-green paint, with red and gold detailing on the saddle cloth and howdah. A coin slot is visible at the tip of the trunk. Mechanical banks of this kind were made as money boxes and collectible toys.
Condition and Originality
The paint shows age-related wear overall, with chipping and a dark patina visible on the feet and lower legs. The red and gold finish on the howdah has losses in places. The cream-coloured tusks are present. Its working order has not been confirmed. Collectors of early American mechanical banks may be drawn to the original painted surfaces, the characterful casting and the colourful decoration of this example.
