Acheloos Head Sculpture

This striking sculpture depicts the head of Acheloos, a river god in Greek mythology, known for his multiple forms and association with fertility. Cast in bronze, the head exhibits a powerful and expressive face, complete with detailed facial features and prominent horns, characteristic of Acheloos’s iconography. The sculpture is mounted on a marble block, providing a stable base and enhancing its aesthetic appeal. The piece is reminiscent of bronzes found at Lezoux, a Roman settlement in Gaul known for its bronze production.

Condition and Collectibility

The sculpture shows signs of age and wear consistent with its antiquity, adding to its character and authenticity. While some surface patina and minor imperfections are present, these do not detract from the overall visual impact of the piece. This sculpture would be a valuable addition to any collection of classical antiquities, appealing to collectors of Roman and Greek art, as well as those interested in mythology and ancient religious iconography.
