Large Alabaster Column Table Lamp
This large alabaster column table lamp takes the form of a classical column, with a stepped square base rising to a fluted shaft and a decorative capital. The piece is a substantial example of the column lamp form, offering a strong vertical presence on a side table, console or sideboard.
The lamp is carved from alabaster, with a warm, translucent cream and honey tone running through the stone. The stepped plinth supports a square block, from which a fluted column rises to a moulded collar and a richly carved capital with scrolled volutes and foliate detailing. The fitting is mounted at the top of the capital and includes a brass-finished socket with a bulb in place and a wire harp above. The overall proportions are generous, making this a striking focal point for a traditional or classically inspired interior.
Condition and Collector Interest
The lamp shows general signs of age and handling. There are small chips and areas of surface marking to the carved capital, a few marks to the fluted column, and some wear and discolouration to the stepped base. The alabaster has a softened, slightly uneven surface in places, which is typical of older carved stone. The fitting and bulb are present, but no testing has been carried out and the lamp is offered as seen.
Carved alabaster column lamps of this scale are sought after by buyers looking for period-style lighting and decorative accents for traditional interiors. Its classical column form, carved capital and the natural translucency of the stone give it character, and it will appeal to collectors of decorative lighting and those restoring or furnishing a period property.
