Antique Signed 1805 Engraving of a Cricket Match
This framed antique engraving depicts a cricket match in a wide, horizontal composition, with the word “CRICKET” lettered above the scene. The print is hand-coloured, with soft washes of green, ochre and blue across the field and sky. Figures are arranged across the landscape: a batsman stands at the wicket while fielders are spread across the ground, and a group of spectators rests in the foreground beside a bare tree. The print is presented in a cream mount beneath a dark wooden frame with a gilt inner slip. The work is described as signed and dated 1805.
Condition and Collector Appeal
The print shows age-related toning to the paper, consistent with its early date, and the gilt slip to the frame displays some wear and flaking. The engraving is presented behind glazing within its original-style mount. Early sporting prints depicting cricket are of continuing interest to collectors of English sporting art and to those researching the history of the game, and a signed example dated 1805 offers a tangible link to the period.
