The Dumb Cake Engraving
This is an antique engraving titled “The Dumb Cake or the Love Charm” by H. Corbould. The scene depicts a domestic interior with a woman preparing a cake, likely referencing the old tradition of ‘dumb cake’ – a cake made in silence and intended to help a young woman dream of her future husband. The engraving showcases detailed linework and a charming depiction of Victorian-era life, reflecting the artistic style prevalent in 19th-century prints.
Condition and Collectibility
The engraving shows signs of age, with some foxing and slight paper discoloration consistent with its age. The paper is delicate but structurally sound. This print would appeal to collectors of Victorian engravings, domestic life depictions, or those interested in folklore and traditions. It offers a glimpse into the past and a unique piece of historical art.
