Antique Fleam Instrument
This is an antique fleam instrument, likely dating from the 18th or 19th century. Constructed from iron, it features a distinctive curved blade designed for phlebotomy – the practice of drawing blood. The design suggests it was used for either human or veterinary purposes, with the curved blade allowing for a controlled incision. The instrument shows clear signs of hand-crafting, indicative of its age and the methods used in its production.
Condition and Collectibility
The fleam instrument exhibits signs of age and use, with some surface corrosion and wear consistent with its age. Despite this, the blade retains its shape and the instrument remains structurally sound. This piece would be of interest to collectors of medical history, veterinary tools, or antique surgical instruments, offering a tangible link to historical medical practices.
