An Antique GPO Candlestick Telephone
This antique GPO candlestick telephone is a black desk telephone of the traditional candlestick design, with a tall upright stem rising from a round base. The upper section houses a bell-shaped mouthpiece, while a separate earpiece rests on a hook arm to one side of the stem. The base carries a rotary dial with lettered finger plates, including ABC, DEF, GHI, JKL, MN, PRS, TUV, WXY and OO, and a central chrome-finished dial plate. A cream-coloured cord runs from the base and loops around the stem and handset.
Condition and Originality
The telephone retains its black finish, although there is visible wear and chipping to the paintwork, most noticeably around the earpiece and on the lower stem. The chrome centre of the rotary dial shows surface wear and discolouration, and some finger plates show signs of age. The item is offered in the condition described and no further testing has been carried out. Candlestick telephones of this type appeal to collectors of British telecommunications and period desk furniture, and an example with its original rotary dial and handset arrangement may be of interest to those furnishing a vintage office, hallway or display collection.
