Antique Engraving of the First Steeplechase on Record
This framed antique print depicts the first steeplechase on record, titled “The First Steeple-Chace on Record” with the subtitle “The last field near Nacton Heath” and marked as Plate III. The engraving is attributed to Henry Alken, as noted in the description provided. The lower caption reads “Accomplished Smashers”, and the scene shows riders in competition over a hedge and a timber gate, with a rural landscape of bare trees and open fields beyond. The composition is a coloured engraving with a black and gilt-edged frame and a cream mount.
Condition and Collector Interest
The print is presented in a black frame with gilt inner moulding and a cream mount, and it is glazed. There is some visible toning and marking to the mount and paper, and the frame shows general signs of age. The subject, an early record of steeplechasing, and the association with Henry Alken’s sporting work may appeal to collectors of equestrian and sporting prints and of antique hunting imagery.
