Antique Irish Dublin Silver Shell Sifter Spoon

This antique Irish sterling silver sifter spoon is hallmarked in Dublin and weighs 24.9g. It has a shell-form bowl pierced with rows of small round perforations, which were used for sifting and straining dry ingredients. The bowl is decorated with fluted radiating lines and engraved scrolling detail, with a scalloped edge to the rim. The stem is of Old English pattern, tapering towards a flat terminal that carries an engraved device. Hallmarks are struck on the reverse of the stem, including the Irish harp mark and a maker’s mark.

Condition and Originality

The spoon shows general age-related wear, with some tarnish and darkening to the recesses of the bowl and areas of surface marking along the stem and terminal. There are light scratches to the surface, and the engraved decoration to the bowl remains clearly defined. The hallmarks are crisp and legible, which supports the item’s identification as an Irish Dublin-made piece. As an unaltered example of an antique Irish silver sifter spoon, it will appeal to collectors of Irish silver, Dublin hallmarked pieces and antique table silver.
