Antique Mahogany Wall Mirror with Parcel Gilt Bird Crest
This antique wall mirror has a mahogany-finish frame with a pierced, scrolled crest topped by a carved bird with outspread wings, picked out in gilt. The bird is described as a Ho-Ho bird or phoenix, a motif often used in mirrors of this style. The frame has a moulded inner edge with a gilt slip framing a bevelled mirror plate, and the lower section of the frame has scrolled sides and an oval panel inlaid with a light-coloured motif, described as a shell. The item is described as either Georgian or Edwardian in style, and the photographs show a design consistent with the period styles of the Georgian era and early twentieth century revival pieces.
Condition, Originality and Collector Appeal
The photographs show a mirror in an overall solid state, with the carved crest and gilded bird intact. There is visible wear to the gilt, with areas where the gilding appears worn or rubbed, as well as scuffs and small marks to the mahogany-finish frame. A small price sticker is attached to the glass at the lower left. The back of the mirror, the mirror plate’s silvering at the edges and the hanging fittings are not visible in the photographs. The combination of the pierced crest, carved gilt bird and inlaid base will appeal to collectors of period mirrors and buyers looking for a decorative feature piece with character.
