Antique Satirical Pen and Ink Cartoon Drawing
This framed antique pen and ink cartoon is a satirical drawing of a stout, bowler-hatted gentleman in a long coat standing before an easel that holds a painting of a cow. He holds a long implement in one hand, while a smaller figure in a cap, carrying a palette, stands to the right. Cattle are drawn in the background, setting the scene in a rural interior. The drawing is worked in black ink with fine line hatching in the background, and the exaggerated figures give the scene a humorous character, appearing to comment on the judging of a cow painting. A small monogram is visible in the lower right corner. The work is set within a cream mount with a double-ruled border and a wooden frame with a gilt inner slip.
Condition, Originality and Collector Appeal
The drawing is presented in its original wooden frame and cream mount, with the gilt inner slip intact. The frame shows wear consistent with age, and a stain or mark runs along the right-hand side of the mount. Pencilled inscriptions appear faintly on the drawing itself but are not legible in the illustration. Works of this kind, with their satirical subject matter and period style, may appeal to collectors of antique caricature, rural and agricultural humour, and English pen and ink cartoon art.
