Antique Perforated Metal Celesta Music Box Discs
This lot offers a collection of antique perforated metal discs for the Celesta music box, a group of pierced metal music discs that would have been played in a mechanical instrument. Each disc is pierced with a dense pattern of holes around its circumference and across its surface, which encoded the tune for playback. The discs are printed with the Celesta name in an ornamental scroll cartouche surrounded by floral and foliate decoration. Several discs carry tune titles in print, including one legibly marked Jolly Tars Polka, adding to their appeal as a group of period mechanical music pieces.
Condition and Collectability
The discs show the expected signs of age, including tarnishing, surface wear and some staining, and a number of them have paper fragments or adhesive tape attached. Their printed decoration and perforated patterns remain visible across the group, and the stack appears to retain its original character. Collectors of mechanical music, music box ephemera and antique decorative metalwork may find this collection of discs of interest, both as a display group and as study material.
