Introduction
This is an antique oriental watercolour portrait painted on pith, presented within a decorative gilt frame. Pith paintings, popular in the 19th century, were created using a thin slice of pith paper, a lightweight material derived from the pith of the tapioca plant. This particular example depicts a lady, rendered in delicate watercolour, and showcases the artistry and skill of the period. The gilt frame enhances the portrait’s elegance and provides a beautiful contrast to the soft tones of the painting.
Condition
The portrait exhibits signs consistent with age, including some minor fading and wear to the pith support. The gilt frame shows some loss of gilding commensurate with its age, adding to its antique character. Despite these minor imperfections, the portrait remains a captivating example of 19th-century oriental art, and would be of interest to collectors of pith paintings, oriental art, or antique portraits.
