An Art Nouveau Inlaid Mantel Clock of Scottish Origin
This Art Nouveau mantel clock is presented as a Scottish-made timepiece, offering the appeal of an early twentieth-century desk or chimneypiece clock. The case is shaped with a gently arched, domed top and stepped shoulders, finished in a warm figured wood with fine stringing around its edges. Two stylised inlaid motifs, resembling tulip or lily forms with trailing tassels, flank the dial and are set against slender tapering panels. The white enamelled dial carries black and blue Roman numerals and a fine minute track, framed by a substantial polished brass bezel. Brass feet complete the design, adding a refined finish to the base.
Condition, Originality and Collector Interest
The case shows the expected patina of age, including light surface marks, scratches and minor wear to the veneer, with some darkening to the finish. The dial has a little toning and the brass elements show natural age. The rear is open to reveal the movement, which is a brass mechanism with visible gearing and a spring-driven arrangement. The brass rear cover is also present, and the overall construction appears original to the piece. Its operation has not been verified, and it is offered as seen with no guarantee of working order. For collectors of Art Nouveau and Edwardian domestic furniture, or those interested in Scottish-made clocks, this piece offers an attractive decorative character and scope for restoration or display.
