Arts and Crafts Box with Ruskin Stone

This Arts and Crafts box with Ruskin stone is a decorative wooden casket with a hand-worked metal overlay to the lid and corners. The lid is set with a central oval inset of mottled blue, green and pink glaze, which is presented as a Ruskin stone. The piece suits a collector of early twentieth-century decorative arts or anyone seeking a period storage box.

The box has a dark-stained wooden body with a hinged lid. The lid is covered with a metal sheet worked in a hammered, uneven finish and edged with a riveted border. A small scrolled mount sits centrally on the front edge, and similar shaped mounts are fitted to the two lower corners. The metalwork shows the simple, organic forms and handmade character associated with the Arts and Crafts movement. The oval inset is the focal point of the design and is set within a rim that matches the metal mounts.

Condition and Originality

The box shows signs of age and handling consistent with its period. The metal overlay has minor dents, uneven patination and surface marks, and the wood shows general wear to its finish. The central inset appears intact, and the overall presentation is consistent with an original piece rather than a later reproduction. As with any item of this age, buyers should view the piece in person or request further images before bidding. For collectors, the combination of hand-worked metal, the distinctive inset and the Arts and Crafts styling offers an appealing example of the period.
