Victorian British Embassy Diplomatic Box

This handsome, dark green leather diplomatic box once belonged to the Right Honourable Sir Edmund Jonson, a British diplomat who served as minister or ambassador to several countries. The exterior features a robust construction with brass fittings and a lock, while the interior is lined with a faded, patterned fabric. A label affixed to the interior lid boldly proclaims “Rt Honble Sir Edmund Jonson, British Embassy”, indicating its official use. The box also bears a label reading “On His Britannic Majesty’s Service”, dated 7-11, and an address at Buckingham Gate, London.

Condition and Collectibility

The box exhibits signs of age and use, with wear to the leather, fading of the interior lining, and some surface scratches. Despite this, the box remains structurally sound and retains its original character. The presence of Sir Edmund Jonson’s name and the official markings make this a highly desirable piece for collectors of diplomatic history, British memorabilia, or antique travel cases. It offers a fascinating glimpse into the world of Victorian diplomacy and would serve as a unique and conversation-starting display item.
