An Antique Burgess’s Genuine Anchovy Paste Pot Lid
This antique ceramic pot lid advertises Burgess’s Genuine Anchovy Paste, described on the lid as “for Toast, Biscuit &c.” The round lid is decorated with black transfer printing and bears the name BURGESS’S across the top, with “Genuine” beneath. The text identifies the firm as “The Original Fish Sauce Warehouse, 107 Strand, corner of the Savoy Steps, London.”
The central motif is a royal coat of arms flanked by a lion and a unicorn, with the motto “Honi soit qui mal y pense” on the shield and the banners “Dieu et mon droit” to either side. The design is framed by a dotted border and sits on a glazed white ground.
Condition and Collectability
The lid has an overall glaze with fine crazing, which is typical of ceramics of this period and is visible across the surface. The transfer-printed lettering and heraldic detail remain clear and legible. As a surviving piece of advertising ceramics linked to a well-known London firm, it will appeal to collectors of antique pottery, kitchenalia and historic food advertising.
