Two Carved Military Wall Plaques from Yokota and Okinawa
This lot comprises two carved wooden wall plaques with military unit associations. The first is a rectangular plaque bearing the legend “374 TAW Maintenance Complex”, with a red torii gate inscribed “Yokota Air Base” and “Japan”. It is flanked by the Military Airlift Command and 374th Tactical Airlift Wing insignia. The second is a shield-shaped plaque commemorating the U.S. Naval Security Group Activity at Hanza, Okinawa, centred on a circular brass-effect roundel with a multicoloured spiral emblem.
Condition, Originality and Collector Appeal
Both plaques show age-related wear consistent with long display. The 374 TAW panel has surface scuffing, minor paint loss and lifting to the painted finish, and the edges show some knocks. The shield has light marks across the timber face and wear to the black painted border, though the carved emblem and lettering remain clear. The insignia appear to be original to the pieces rather than later replacements. Unit-specific pieces such as these appeal to collectors of US military memorabilia, Cold War era Pacific base history and regimental wall decor, and their distinctive hand-carved character makes them an attractive display choice for a military history enthusiast.
