An Art Deco Clarice Cliff Water Lily Preserve Pot
This lidded preserve pot and honey jar, shape 987, is decorated in the Water Lily pattern by Clarice Cliff for Newport Pottery Co, England. It dates from the 1930s, a period when the Art Deco style shaped British ceramic design. Clarice Cliff’s bold, hand-applied decoration made her one of the most recognisable names of the era.
The rounded body is moulded with soft, horizontal ribbing that catches the light across its glazed surface. The painted decoration features stylised green leaves, pink blossoms and a brown-tinged accent, with a pale blue band encircling the rim and lid. The lid is topped with a sculpted bud finial in pink and green, which gives the piece a playful, botanical character. The underside carries a green printed mark reading Clarice Cliff, Newport Pottery Co, England, with impressed numerals beneath.
Condition and Collector Appeal
The photographs show a generally bright glaze with no obvious cracks, chips or repairs to the body, though a few light surface speckles and marks are visible on the underside of the base. Some wear consistent with the age of the piece may be present, and the fit between the lid and body should be checked on handling, as the photographs cannot confirm this fully. Pieces from the Clarice Cliff Newport Pottery Co period are sought after by collectors of Art Deco ceramics, and this example, with its distinctive Water Lily decoration and recognisable shape 987 form, would make an appealing addition to a 1930s collection or a striking display piece.
