Copeland Spode Blue and White Platter and Royal Worcester Exotic Butterflies Plate
This lot comprises two pieces of English ceramics: a blue and white platter attributed to Copeland Spode and a decorative plate from the Royal Worcester Collectors Series. The platter is oval with cut corners and a blue and white transfer-printed design. Its wide border carries floral and scrolling motifs around a central scene showing classical ruins, a stone arch, a tree, a distant church and figures with livestock beside water. The plate has a cream ground decorated with multicoloured butterflies, flowering sprays and foliage, arranged around a central roundel and a series of cartouche-shaped panels. A gilt edge frames the rim. The reverse of the plate bears a printed note stating that it is number three in a series of Chinoiseries, titled Exotic Butterflies, and that it was issued by Royal Worcester from the archives of The Worcester Royal Porcelain Company and the Dyson Perrins Museum.
Condition and Collector Interest
This assessment is based on photographs only, and the pieces should be examined in person before bidding. The platter shows no obvious damage in the images, though a small area of residue is visible on the underside near the top edge, and it should be checked for any hairline cracks, chips or wear. The plate shows a small remnant of label or tape on its reverse near the rim, and the gilt edge and surface should be inspected under good light. Both pieces are offered as seen. Buyers interested in English blue and white transfer-printed wares may appreciate the classical scene on the platter, while collectors of Royal Worcester limited series plates and chinoiserie-inspired designs may find the butterfly plate of particular interest.
