Boxed Freeplay Self Powered Wind-Up Radio
This lot is a Freeplay self powered radio, offered in its original box. The box is labelled “The Self Powered Radio” and carries the Freeplay and Freepower branding, identifying the item as a wind-up portable receiver that requires no batteries or mains power to operate. The lot is described as a Freeplay wind up clockwork radio.
The printed packaging describes a black portable set with a moulded carrying handle, a front speaker grille and a dial marked for FM and AM reception. Tuning and volume controls sit on the front, and the box artwork shows a sockets panel on the side. The wind-up handle is located on the back of the radio, and the box states that it winds in seconds and plays for up to an hour.
Condition and Collectability
The box shows general signs of age and handling, including creasing and edge wear, with a piece of tape visible on the lid. The contents have not been tested and the set’s working order cannot be confirmed. Boxed Freeplay wind-up radios are of interest to collectors of late twentieth-century portable audio and to buyers looking for a self powered radio, and the original packaging adds to its appeal as a display or collector’s piece.
