French Model 1866 Chassepot Yataghan Sword Bayonet

This French Model 1866 Chassepot yataghan sword bayonet is a single-edged steel blade with a distinctive curved profile, tapering to a pointed tip. It is named for the Model 1866 Chassepot, the French military rifle for which this type of bayonet was made. The blade is fitted with a hooked quillon at the crossguard, a hallmark of the yataghan form, and a grip wrapped in ribbed metal with a rounded pommel. Its combination of curved blade and hooked guard makes it a recognisable example of nineteenth-century French military edged weaponry.

Condition and Collector Interest

The blade shows overall surface rust and speckled discolouration along its length, with the metal surface worn in places. The grip and crossguard retain their form, and the ribbed grip is present. The item is offered in the condition described and has not been restored. Collectors of French military bayonets and nineteenth-century edged weapons may value this piece for its original form and its association with the Model 1866 Chassepot rifle, particularly as a candidate for display or further study.
