German WWI Swallowed Nests Shoulder Boards

These striking shoulder boards are believed to be from a German army bandsman during World War I, commonly referred to as “swallowed nests” due to their distinctive shape. Constructed with a black base, they feature elaborate gold braiding and detailing, indicative of the uniform embellishments worn by musicians within military bands. The intricate design suggests a high rank or specialized role within the band, and they would have been a prominent feature of the bandsman’s formal uniform.

Condition and Collectibility

These shoulder boards exhibit signs of age and wear consistent with their historical period, with some fading and minor loss to the gold braiding. Despite this, the overall structure remains intact, and the boards retain their distinctive shape and aesthetic appeal. They represent a rare and fascinating piece of WWI militaria, appealing to collectors of military uniforms, musical instruments, and historical artifacts.
