Grimswades WWI Farm Plate
This is a decorative ceramic plate produced by Grimswades of Stoke on Trent, featuring imagery inspired by the cartoons of Bruce Bairnsfather. The plate depicts a satirical scene of life “at a farm” – a thinly veiled reference to the trench warfare of World War One. The design incorporates barbed wire, a makeshift shelter constructed from branches, and soldiers in a humorous, yet poignant, setting. The rim of the plate is decorated with imagery of farm produce and military equipment, further emphasizing the contrast between rural life and the realities of war.
Condition
This plate exhibits signs consistent with age and use, including some surface wear and minor crazing to the glaze. Despite this, the design remains remarkably vibrant and legible. This plate is a desirable piece for collectors of WWI memorabilia, particularly those interested in trench art and satirical depictions of the war. Its unique design and historical context make it a compelling addition to any collection.
