Railway Gate Warning Sign
This is a cast iron notice from the Great Southern & Western Railway (GSW), warning that any person leaving the gate open is liable to a penalty. The sign features bold, raised lettering on a dark background, typical of railway signage from the period. It would have been prominently displayed near a level crossing or access gate on the GSW network, serving as a clear deterrent against negligence and ensuring the safety of railway operations.
Condition and Collectability
The sign exhibits signs of age and weathering, consistent with its outdoor use and likely dating from the late 19th or early 20th century. The cast iron shows some surface rust and wear, adding to its authentic character. This piece would be of particular interest to collectors of railwayana, industrial signage, or those with an interest in the history of the Great Southern & Western Railway.
