Woodland Scene by H Sinclair
This oil on board painting depicts a wooded riverside landscape with a gnarled, leaning tree, a cascading waterfall and a winding path through dense foliage. Two figures occupy the foreground beside the water, one standing and one seated, in keeping with the description of ladies washing and a gentleman fishing. A signature in the lower section is attributed to H Sinclair. The painting is housed in an ornate gilt wooden frame with scrolled corner and centre mouldings and a fluted inner slip, with the board’s reverse showing handwritten pencil annotations.
Condition and Collector Appeal
The paint surface shows scattered dust, fine surface scratches and some small areas of speckling and wear. The frame displays chipping, flaking gilt and general age-related wear, most noticeably along the lower edge, where pale paint and older tape are visible. The reverse carries old tape and paper, and the board itself shows its age. This piece will appeal to collectors of British landscape painting and gilt frame decoration, and to buyers interested in a decorative woodland scene that may suit sympathetic conservation or reframing.
