Hackney Carriage Lantern Introduction

This is a vintage Hackney carriage lantern, likely dating from the Victorian or Edwardian era. Constructed from metal, it features a square housing with a mounting stem designed to attach to a carriage. The presence of a red lens suggests it was used as a rear signal light, common on horse-drawn carriages for visibility and safety. This style of lantern would have illuminated the way and indicated the carriage’s presence to other road users.

Hackney Carriage Lantern Condition

The lantern exhibits signs of age and use, with surface corrosion and wear consistent with its age. The lens is present, though may exhibit some clouding or minor damage. Despite its condition, this lantern presents a fascinating piece of transport history and would be of interest to collectors of antique lighting, carriage memorabilia, or those interested in Victorian-era transport.
