Hallmarked Silver Lidded Glass Sugar Sifter

This lot is a hallmarked silver lidded glass sugar sifter, offering a traditional piece of silver-mounted tableware for the collector of antique dining and table silver. The glass body is cut with criss-cross and diamond-pattern decoration, with fan-cut detail, and it widens towards a lobed, scalloped foot. The silver top has a domed lid with a pierced, openwork design and a small knop finial, and a plain silver collar joins the lid to the glass. The collar carries British hallmarks, including the lion passant sterling standard mark and what appears to be a maker’s mark with the initials JR.

Condition and Collector Interest

The sifter shows wear consistent with its age, including light surface marks and some tarnishing to the silver lid and collar. There is residue from an old label on the glass near the base, and the glass shows scratches and general handling marks. The hallmarks on the collar remain legible, which supports the identification of the silver as British sterling. Its combination of cut glass and hallmarked silver mounts will appeal to collectors of Victorian and Edwardian-style silver and antique table accessories, as well as those looking to add a decorative piece to a traditional dining collection.
