Hand Carved Indonesian Wooden Chess Set

This hand carved Indonesian chess set combines a richly decorated folding board with a full array of sculpted playing pieces. The board has a deeply carved border of scrolling foliate motifs and a rope-twist inner edge, and it is finished with a carved carrying handle at the base. The chequered squares alternate between a warm honey-toned timber and a dark, almost ebonised stain. The pieces are carved in a stylised Balinese manner, with ornate headdresses, fierce faces and angular bodies. Lighter and darker finishes distinguish the two sides, giving the set an striking, sculptural presence on a table.

Condition and Collectability

The set shows the expected signs of age and handling for hand carved timber. The board has surface wear, minor chips to the edges and a few marks on the playing surface, and the carving has softened in places. Some pieces show dark staining, uneven patina and small nicks typical of pieces that have been played with or displayed over many years. The overall presentation remains attractive and the carving detail is still clearly legible. Please be aware that as we are now VAT registered the buyers commission is now 17.5% plus VAT.

#### As of 1/10/2021 we will be implementing a 7 day collection rule – items must be collected within 7 days unless an agreement is arranged in the event of instances such as being away on holiday, medical reasons etc. Any lots that are not collected within 7 days will be liable to a storage charge of £1.20 per day.
