Introduction

This is a striking hand-carved wooden face mask, strongly influenced by traditional Maori designs. The mask features intricate detailing around the eyes, nose, and mouth, and a textured, almost woven pattern across the forehead. The wood appears to be a dense hardwood, and the carving style suggests a skilled artisan with a deep understanding of tribal aesthetics. It is a bold and visually arresting piece, likely intended for ceremonial or decorative purposes.

Condition

The mask shows signs of age and wear, with some minor surface imperfections and possible fading of the wood’s natural colour. These imperfections contribute to its character and authenticity, suggesting it is a genuine, vintage piece. Collectors of ethnographic art or tribal masks will appreciate its unique aesthetic and the craftsmanship involved in its creation. It would make a striking addition to a collection or a unique statement piece for a discerning buyer.
