Antique Horn Fishing Priest

This is a traditional horn fishing priest, likely dating to the late 19th or early 20th century. Crafted from a single piece of horn, it features a hollowed-out cavity designed to humanely dispatch caught fish. The horn is secured with a woven cord for easy handling and transport, and exhibits a rich patina consistent with age and use. These priests were essential tools for anglers, particularly those practicing fly fishing, ensuring a swift and ethical end for their catch.

Condition and Collectibility

The horn priest shows signs of wear and age, including minor surface scratches and variations in colour, which are typical for an item of this age. The woven cord is present, though may show some fraying. This piece would appeal to collectors of antique fishing tackle, angling enthusiasts, or those interested in historical sporting equipment. It represents a bygone era of fishing and offers a tangible connection to the traditions of the sport.
