Traditional Japanese Cast Iron Nanbu Tekki Tetsubin Teapot
This lot is a traditional Japanese cast iron teapot in the nanbu tekki tetsubin style. It has a dark, matt finish, a domed lid with a small finial, and a fixed black metal handle arching over the top. The body is decorated with a relief foliage design set against fine vertical ribbing, and the lid features radiating lines around its central finial. A spout projects from one side of the body. Tetsubin of this type are associated with the Nanbu ironworking tradition of northern Japan and are traditionally used for heating and serving water and tea.
Condition and Collectability
The teapot shows general signs of age and use, including some small areas of rust-coloured speckling to the base and the rim edge. Small impressed characters are visible on the side of the body, and the surface retains its original cast texture and patina. The lid, handle and spout appear to be present, and no restoration or replacement parts are evident. Lots of this kind are of interest to collectors of Japanese metalwork, tea ceremony enthusiasts and buyers seeking a decorative or traditional cast iron piece with period character. Prospective buyers are advised to inspect the lot in person or request further details before bidding.
