Royal Satsuma Japanese Vase with Court and Landscape Scenes

This lot is a Japanese-style Royal Satsuma vase, decorated with traditional court and landscape scenes. It has a baluster form with a flared rim and a broad, footed base, and is offered as a decorative ceramic piece for the collector or interior enthusiast.

The vase is decorated in the Satsuma manner, with richly coloured polychrome enamels and gilt highlights over a cream ground. The body is divided into panels depicting figures in traditional dress, pavilions, and garden and landscape settings, while the shoulder and neck carry dark-ground bands with floral medallions, scrollwork and geometric patterns. The foot is decorated with a band of stylised flowers and dotted gilt detailing. The combination of figurative panels and ornate borders is characteristic of the decorative export wares associated with the Satsuma style.

Decorative Japanese Vase Offered in Presented Condition

The vase is offered in the condition shown, and no restoration or repair is stated in the lot details. Buyers are advised to inspect the piece carefully and to contact the auction house with any questions regarding condition before bidding, as the vase is sold as seen. Its surface decoration, gilding and enamelled panels are the principal features, and their level of wear should be considered by prospective buyers. Pieces of this type, with densely painted court and landscape scenes and a clear decorative scheme, are often sought by collectors of Japanese ceramics and by those seeking statement decorative vases for display.
