A Pair of Kernewek and Japanese Gurgle Fish Vases

This lot comprises two gurgle fish vases, one attributed to Kernewek and one to Japanese manufacture. Gurgle vases take the form of a fish, with the mouth forming the opening and a hollow body that produces a gurgling sound when liquid is poured. The pairing offers a useful comparison between two different makers and approaches to the form.

The vase to the left has a metallic, gold-toned finish with a sculpted fish body, scale detail and a spiral-patterned eye. The vase to the right has a rich brown glaze, mottled with cream and speckled tones, and a more rounded, stylised fish form with a modelled eye and fin. Both pieces are hollow-bodied, with the mouth opening at the top and the body curving to form the gurgle.

Condition and Collector Appeal

Both vases show a glazed finish across their visible surfaces. Further detail on condition cannot be confirmed from the information available, and the lot is offered as viewed. Buyers are encouraged to request further information before bidding.

The pair will appeal to collectors of Cornish studio pottery, Japanese ceramics and novelty gurgle vessels. Its contrasting finishes and stylistic approaches make it an interesting grouping for those building a collection around the gurgle fish form.
