Vintage M.E.L Tank Periscope Sight

This lot is an M.E.L tank periscope sight, a green painted metal optical housing of the type used in armoured vehicles. It is offered as a collectible military optical item for enthusiasts of tank equipment and vintage military hardware.

The sight is built as a rectangular metal box with a sloping front window. Two glass lenses are set within the front aperture, with further lens elements visible through the window. The base and sides carry mounting flanges pierced with bolt holes, and a blue and white oval maker’s plate bearing the M.E.L name is fixed to the top of the housing. The utilitarian green finish and fixing arrangement reflect its military origin.

Condition and Collectability

The housing retains its original green paintwork, which shows scratches, scuffs and areas of chipped yellow paint along the edges and corners, consistent with age and handling. The maker’s plate is present on the top face, and a paper tag is attached to the upper surface. The glass lenses show some marks and surface wear. The lot is sold as seen, and no statement is made regarding its working order or completeness.

Its original finish, maker’s identification and robust military construction are likely to appeal to collectors of tank optics, militaria and vintage armoured vehicle equipment, as well as those seeking display or restoration pieces.
