About This Pair of Vases
This striking pair of vases exemplifies the artistry of the Japanese Meiji period (1868-1912). Crafted using the intricate cloisonné technique, these vases feature delicate wirework (cloisons) defining compartments filled with vibrant enamel pastes. The vases are decorated with a repeating pattern of stylized flowers and foliage, set against a dark ground, and finished with gilded accents. The meticulous detail and rich colour palette are characteristic of high-quality Meiji-era cloisonné work, intended for both domestic enjoyment and export to a growing Western market.
Condition and Collectibility
These vases exhibit signs consistent with age and use, including minor enamel loss and surface wear, which is typical for pieces of this era. The cloisonné work remains largely intact, and the overall aesthetic appeal is strong. Collectors appreciate Meiji cloisonné for its technical skill, artistic design, and historical significance, representing a period of significant cultural exchange and artistic innovation in Japan. These vases would be a beautiful addition to any collection of Japanese art or decorative objects.
