Trough Compass Overview
This is a military-style trough compass, a surveying instrument used for accurate directional readings. The compass features a long, rectangular trough with a sighting mechanism and a rotating card marked with degrees. The construction appears to be brass and wood, with a folding sight and a level to ensure accurate horizontal alignment. This type of compass was commonly employed in military applications for mapmaking, reconnaissance, and artillery positioning.
Condition and Collectibility
The compass exhibits signs of age and use, consistent with its likely military history. The wood casing shows wear and some minor damage, and the brass components display patina. Despite this, the compass remains a fascinating example of early surveying technology. It would be of interest to collectors of military memorabilia, antique scientific instruments, or those interested in the history of navigation and surveying.
