A Pair of Edwardian His and Her Chairs
This pair of Edwardian his and her chairs offers two matching seats with carved wooden crest rails, each with a pierced central roundel and scrolled detailing. The uprights are reeded, and the backs and seats are upholstered in a floral tapestry-style fabric with a fine braid trim. The chair on the left has padded armrests in a pale fabric and turned front legs, with castors fitted to some of the legs. The chair on the right has open wooden arms with reeded detailing and similar turned legs. Together they show the decorative carved woodwork typical of the period.
Condition and Originality
The upholstery shows clear signs of age and use. The seat of the left chair has areas of wear, fraying and loss, and there are marks and staining across the fabric of both chairs. A paper tag is attached to the seat of the left chair. The wooden frames show general wear to their finish, with the carved detail still clearly defined. The fabric on both chairs would benefit from attention, so these chairs may suit a buyer who enjoys restoring period furniture or who wants a characterful pair for reupholstery. The matching carved frames and the pairing of two chairs with his and her styling are the main points of interest for collectors of Edwardian seating.
