Pottery Clown Salt Pig
This hand-modelled pottery clown salt pig takes the form of a whimsical clown figure, with a tall conical hat, a frilled ruff and a large open cavity at the front of the body. Its sculptural character is typical of figural pottery, where the form is built up from applied clay rather than thrown on a wheel. The body is finished in a earthy brown clay tone, with textured curls forming the hair and additional clay balls, coils and rolls applied across the sides and base. Areas of pale green and yellow glaze, together with rust-toned drips over the lower skirt, add colour and contrast to the surface. The hat’s spiralled and banded surface and the ruffled collar give the piece considerable visual interest from the front and sides.
