Vintage Predecimal Price Tags
This is a large and varied collection of predecimal price tags, used by market traders and shopkeepers before the UK switched to decimal currency in 1971. The tags are predominantly made of card and feature a range of prices in pounds, shillings, and pence – including values like 6d, 10p, 38p, and 42p. Many tags relate to fresh produce, with references to potatoes, tomatoes, grapefruit, and specific potato varieties like ‘King Edward’, ‘Maris Piper’, and ‘Majestic’. The colourful designs and varied typography reflect the character of retail during this period.
Condition and Collectibility
The tags show signs of age and use, with some creasing, edge wear, and fading – consistent with their history as working retail items. Despite this, the collection is remarkably extensive and offers a fascinating glimpse into the pricing of goods during the predecimal era. This lot will appeal to collectors of ephemera, social history enthusiasts, and those interested in the evolution of retail practices. The tags are original and represent a tangible piece of British commercial history.
