Princess Mary Christmas Gift Tin
This is a Princess Mary Christmas Gift Tin, presented to the troops at the front during the First World War in 1914. Commissioned by Princess Mary, daughter of King George V, these tins were intended to provide a small comfort to the soldiers over the Christmas period. The tin itself is made of a brass-coloured metal and features embossed decoration, including a portrait of Princess Mary and the British Red Cross emblem. The tin originally contained a selection of gifts, including cigarettes, tobacco, chocolate, and a Christmas card.
Condition
This tin shows signs of age and wear consistent with its history and use during wartime. There is some surface corrosion and minor dents, but the embossed details remain largely visible. While the original contents are not present, the tin itself is a fascinating and evocative piece of First World War memorabilia, highly sought after by collectors of military history and ephemera. It represents a poignant gesture of support for the troops and offers a tangible connection to a significant historical event.
